The Bardstown Bourbon Co. Lochs of Jura Barrel Finish is a highly acclaimed, limited-release blend of straight bourbon and rye whiskies finished for an extensive 32 months in Single Malt Scotch casks sourced from Scotland's remote Isle of Jura. Released in late summer 2026 as part of Bardstown's Collaborative/Barrel Finish Series, this 104-proof (52% ABV) expression achieved massive recognition by winning Best American Whiskey at the 2026 IWSC Awards with a near-perfect score of 99 points.
The Whiskey Blend & Breakdown
True to Bardstown Bourbon Company's hallmark transparency, the exact composition of the base blend is fully detailed:
- 49% Indiana Bourbon (11-Year): Mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley.
- 30% Indiana Rye (10-Year): High-rye mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley.
- 21% Kentucky Bourbon (12-Year): Mash bill of 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley.
The Scotch Cask Finishing
The blend was finished for 32 months—marking the longest finishing period Bardstown has ever executed for a national release. The Jura Scotch casks are split by type to pull different flavor profiles:
- 84% ex-Bourbon Scotch Barrels: Adds a soft maltiness, vanilla, and subtle maritime, sea-salt elements native to Jura's coastal geography.
- 16% ex-Sherry Scotch Barrels: Introduces rich, fruit-forward accents of dark cherry, raisin, and fig.
Tasting Profile & Pricing
The flavor profile bridges traditional American sweetness with European single malt nuance:
- Nose: Candied vanilla crème, blackberry compote, fresh mint, and toasted oak, alongside elements of Danish butter cookies and cigar box.
- Palate: Dark fruits (blueberry, dark cherry), chocolate, fresh spearmint, caramel, and light cinnamon baking spice, balanced by a soft maltiness.
- Finish: Complex and lingering with fruit-forward sherry notes, baking spices, and a whisper of maritime campfire smoke without heavy peat
