Doc Swinson’s "Funky Drummer" Straight Rye Whiskey is a highly unique, limited-run expression from the brand's Exploratory Cask Series that features a high-ester Jamaican rum cask finish. Inspired by the intersection of bold American rye and tropical tiki cocktail culture, this release deliberately highlights the intense, ester-heavy "muck funk" profile typical of traditional Jamaican distilleries.
The Mash Bill and Composition
Unlike a standard single-source whiskey, Doc Swinson's builds this expression by blending two distinct straight rye whiskeys sourced from MGP in Indiana:
- 95% Rye / 5% Malted Barley: Selected to provide punchy, aggressive rye spice and backbone.
- 51% Rye / 45% Corn / 4% Malted Barley: A "barely legal" rye added to inject structure, sweetness, and mid-palate balance.
Production & Cask Finishing Details
The aging and finishing process varies slightly depending on the specific batch release:
- The Casks: The finishing vessels are heavy-ester Jamaican rum casks that previously held Tennessee whiskey, aging Jamaican rums for up to 20 years before arriving at Doc Swinson's.
- Batch 25-001 (Late 2025 Release): Features older components aged between 8 to 11 years (minimum 7 years in new charred oak, followed by 1 to 4 years in the rum casks) and is bottled at 99.3 proof.
- Batch 22-0013 / Earlier Releases: Typically utilized a base blend of 5 to 6-year-old ryes finished for several months, bottled at a higher 105.3 to 106.4 proof.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Dominant notes of overripe banana, pineapple chunks, dark brown sugar, molasses, and a distinct, savory rubber-and-esters "rum funk" underlying classic baking spices.
- Palate: A velvety, oily mouthfeel that leads with upfront black pepper and cayenne rye spice. It quickly transitions into a sweet profile of caramelized tropical fruits, hot buttered rum, vanilla, and toasted oak.
- Finish: Long and warming, closing out with lingering tones of dark molasses, clove, earthy oak, and subtle hints of sweetened coffee.
