Lagavulin 8 Year Old is a bold, distillate-forward Islay single malt Scotch whisky bottled at a robust 48% ABV (96 proof). Originally launched in 2016 as a limited-edition release to celebrate the distillery’s 200th anniversary, it was inspired by a historic 1886 visit from legendary whisky writer Alfred Barnard, who praised an 8-year expression he sampled at the distillery. Due to its massive popularity, Diageo integrated it into the core lineup as a permanent fixture.
Flavor Profile & Characteristics
Unlike its iconic older sibling, the Lagavulin 16 Year Old, the 8-year expression relies heavily on aged ex-bourbon refill casks, leaving the liquid a remarkably pale, natural white-wine straw color. This minimal wood influence allows the raw, fiery Islay character to dominate the palate.
- Nose: Sharp maritime sea air, intense charcoal, ash, bright lemon zest, and faint hints of milk chocolate.
- Palate: Light and pleasantly oily texture. A massive burst of sweet, earthy peat smoke, black pepper spice, and clean bonfire notes.
- Finish: Extremely long, clean, and warming. It yields a distinct trademark dryness alongside lingering sweet smoke and subtle minty dark chocolate.
