Unlike standard single-expression bourbons, the base of the Cigar Cut Island Blend is a thoughtful marriage of three distinct Old Elk house styles, each aged for a minimum of six years:
- High-Malt Straight Bourbon
- Straight Rye Whiskey
- Straight Wheat Whiskey
The "Island Blend" Cask Finishing
Following their initial aging, the components undergo an intricate secondary maturation in a vibrant combination of tropical and European fortified wine casks:
- Bourbon component: Finished in Sherry and Port casks.
- Rye component: Finished in Rum barrels (yielding prominent island-inspired notes).
- Wheat component: Finished in Sauternes casks.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Heavy tropical fruits, stone fruit, pear, sweet vanilla, baked bread, rye spice, molasses, and a hint of oak.
- Palate: Viscous and full-bodied. It leads with prominent rye spice, banana, and rum-forward sweetness balanced by honey and warm vanilla.
- Finish: Long, warming, and slightly dry with lingering notes of spearmint, cinnamon, black licorice, and wood. It delivers a classic "Kentucky hug" due to the proof, but it rounds out beautifully without leaning into heavy tobacco flavors.
