"Mel's Hidden Nectar Of The Gods" 9.5 years old and 120.8p.

The journey to selecting a barrel with Old Elk began with a wheated bourbon store pick from South Carolina. I went to a bottle share at my friend Bill's house, and he excitedly poured me a sample from the seven-year-old pick.

"I think this is my favorite bourbon I've ever had in my life!" he exclaimed. I tried it, and it was indeed delicious.

"Can we pick a barrel with them?" he asked.

"How about we go out to Colorado and try to top it?" I replied.

Two months later, we landed in Denver to do just that. We drove an hour and a half to Fort Collins and met up with Mike, the Director of Sales, and Mel Maddox, the Master Blender. After a short tour, we got to work, sampling twelve barrels of all different types.

Our favorite was a wheated bourbon, so we tasted it again with Mel.

"It's very good, but it isn't great yet," I said.

I have an incredible amount of respect for what she did next. Instead of trying to sell me on it, she took a sip and agreed. "Let me go check my notes and see what I can do."

A few minutes later, she came back and called out a barrel number to the team. They began searching for the barrel. They pulled it down, and we cracked it open to taste. What we tasted was so incredible we couldn’t believe it.

It turns out she had pulled down her favorite barrel, which, at the time of bottling, was nine years and nine months old — the oldest Old Elk Wheated Bourbon single barrel ever released in the country.

We asked Mel to name the barrel, and a week later, she messaged me back with "Hidden N.O.G." — short for "Nectar of the Gods." I loved it, but it needed one last touch.

We hope you enjoy Mel’s Hidden N.O.G.
