Nestled in a commercial district of Louisville, far from the glamour of Whiskey Row, there is a discreet warehouse that is home to one of the most exciting producers of American whiskey today. The company is called Old Louisville, and the owner is named Amine. We had the pleasure of visiting him during our club barrel-picking trip in October, and we couldn’t be happier that we called to inquire about stopping by that morning! Within minutes of Amine inviting us in, we were sampling eleven-year-old MGP bourbon, cognac finishes, and so much more! The knowledge he shared with us during our tasting was akin to that of a tenured college professor teaching a class.

The sample that ranked the highest for us among the many we tried was an eight-year toasted rye barrel with a Kentucky-style mash bill: 51% rye, 45% corn, and 4% malted barley. The rye was aged for seven years in the original barrel and then aged for one year and three months in a heavy-toast barrel. The nose greets you with rich caramelized sugars, which immediately greet you on the palate, but are beautifully intertwined with sweet rye notes. The star of the show for us, though, was an espresso note sweetened with vanilla simple syrup that lingers on the finish and draws you back for another pour.

Amine and Old Louisville will be my first call anytime we are looking to source picks from an NDP because of his dedication to quality products and world-class customer service. We may even have something scheduled in early March… Cheers, KWS!

This Kentucky style rye has a mash bill of 51% Rye/45% Corn/4% Malted Barley spent 1 year and 3 months in a second heavily toasted barrel.
