The GlenDronach Ode to the Dark completes the distillery's Master’s Anthology trilogy. This expression is widely considered the crown jewel and the most indulgent release of the collection, operating as an unapologetic "sherry bomb".
Cask Maturation & Specifications
While the other two entries explore alternative cask types (Port) or styles (Peat), Ode to the Dark focuses entirely on maximizing the distillery’s core hallmark: deep, sticky sherry maturation.
- Cask Type: Matured exclusively in select Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks. It is incredibly difficult to mature a spirit solely in PX casks because PX is intensely sweet, meaning it requires expert precision to ensure the wood does not completely overwhelm the malt.
- ABV: Bottled at a punchy 50.8% ABV (the highest proof in the trilogy).
- Presentation: Rich, naturally dark mahogany in color and non-chill filtered.
Tasting Notes
The high proof perfectly carries the massive, dessert-like weight of the PX casks, giving the whisky an exceptionally luxurious, velvety mouthfeel.
- Nose: A dense symphony of molasses, fig jam, and juicy raisins layered with dark chocolate, espresso mocha, and a hint of warm Christmas cake.
- Palate: Full-bodied, thick, and syrupy. Velvet layers of smooth espresso and creme caramel fold into black grape, dark cherry cordial, and mint chocolate ganache, all backed by a warming baking spice like ginger and cinnamon.
- Finish: Exceptionally long, rich, and sweet. It shifts toward drier tones, leaving lingering notes of tobacco, polished oak shavings, dark cocoa, and prunes.
