The GlenDronach Ode to the Embers is the peated, highly distinctive expression within the Master’s Anthology trilogy. Subtitled "Sherry & Smoke," it pays homage to the historical periods when the distillery used peat smoke to kiln and dry its malted barley.
Cask Maturation & Specifications
While Ode to the Valley leans into Port wine casks, Ode to the Embers returns to the distillery’s core strengths but introduces an earthy twist:
  • Cask Type: Fully matured in a combination of signature Pedro Ximénez (PX) and Oloroso sherry casks.
  • The Peat Profile: It uses Highland peat sourced from Aberdeenshire. Unlike the heavily medicinal, maritime, or briny peat common to Islay whiskies (like Laphroaig or Ardbeg), Highland peat is derived from heather, bracken, and ferns. This gives it a much softer, more floral, and campfire-like smoke.
  • ABV: Bottled at a higher 48.4% ABV.
  • Presentation: Natural color and non-chill filtered.
Tasting Notes
The interplay between the deep sweetness of the sherry casks and the gentle wood smoke creates a profile that reviewers often compare to a rich, smoked dessert.
  • Nose: Immediate notes of sweet, mild wood smoke and smoldering embers mixed with classic GlenDronach traits. Aromas of toffee apple, dark raisins, orange zest, roasted chestnuts, and caramelized walnuts dominate, with a hint of savory smoked meat.
  • Palate: Thick, buttery, and full-bodied. Bold layers of dark fruits (raisins, black cherry, and dates) merge with milk chocolate biscuit, honeyed walnuts, and a distinct layer of warm wood smoke and soot.
  • Finish: Medium to long. The peat smoke becomes most prominent here, leaving a lingering warmth alongside drying cocoa, baking spices, and a final flourish of juicy raisins.
