The Hakushu Single Malt Japanese Whisky "Story of the Distillery" 2024 Edition is a special, limited non-age statement (NAS) release designed as a direct tribute to the history, natural environment, and legacy of Suntory's famous "Forest Distillery." Released exclusively alongside a sister Yamazaki bottling, this edition celebrates the brand’s deep heritage—particularly following Hakushu’s 50th anniversary and a major distillery renovation in 2023.
The bottling acts as a literal and narrative "story" of what makes the Hakushu Distillery unique, focusing on three core elements:
1. The Heritage of the "Forest Distillery"
The presentation box and bottle package explicitly depict the physical architecture of the Hakushu Distillery nestled deep within the pine forests of Mt. Kaikomagatake in the Japanese Southern Alps. Founded in 1973 by Keizo Saji (Suntory’s second Master Blender), the distillery’s story is defined by its microclimate and its incredibly soft water, which is filtered through thousand-year-old granite rock. The 2024 label celebrates the distillery's sweeping 2023 modernizations while honoring this original, untouched high-altitude ecosystem.
2. The Liquid Profile: Peat Meets Bourbon Casks
Unlike the standard flagship releases, the Story of the Distillery 2024 Edition features a unique component blend curated by 5th Generation Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo:
- The Vatting: It centers heavily on carefully selected smoky, peated Hakushu malt that has been aged in Bourbon barrels.
- The Flavor Logic: The vanilla-like, creamy sweetness imparted by the bourbon white oak is purposefully contrasted against Hakushu's signature crisp, herbal, and sharp "cold ash" peat smoke.

- Aroma: Fresh pineapple, vanilla cream, elderflower, and roasted green tea (hojicha).
