The Hakushu Story of the Distillery 2025 Edition is the second release in Suntory's limited-run annual series designed to "unravel the story" of its legendary whisky houses. Launched as a follow-up to the highly sought-after 2024 debut, this special single malt serves as both a celebration of craftsmanship and a tribute to the unique mountain-forest environment of the Hakushu Distillery.  
The Story: A Distillery Born of the Forest
Built in 1973, Hakushu is nestled deep in the foothills of Mount Kaikomagatake within Japan's Southern Alps, sitting at an elevation of roughly 700 meters. Known globally as the "Forest Distillery," the site’s character is fundamentally shaped by its pristine, high-altitude microclimate and the incredibly soft mountain water filtered through ancient granite.  
The 2025 Edition focuses on this profound connection to nature. To visually tell this story, Suntory crafts the bottle's label and decorative gift box from handmade Echizen washi paper, featuring a delicate, green-tinted depiction of the distillery buildings completely surrounded by lush woodlands. It serves as a visual reminder of the forest ecosystem that breathes flavor into every maturing cask.  
The Liquid: The Smoky Side of Hakushu
While standard Hakushu expressions (like the 12-year-old) emphasize bright, crisp green fruits and light herbs, the Story of the Distillery series intentionally spotlights a more distinct, peated flavor profile.
