The Hakushu Single Malt Japanese Whisky "Story of the Distillery" 2026 Edition is the third installment in an ongoing annual series originally launched by The House of Suntory to highlight the distinct environment, history, and craft of its famous production sites. Following the landmark 100th anniversary of Suntory whisky in 2023, the annual "Story of the Distillery" series was created to dive deeper into the unique microclimates and natural settings that define their single malts.
The Core Concept: The "Distillery in the Forest"
Established in 1973 by second Master Blender Keizo Saji, Hakushu Distillery is famously known as Japan’s premier "forest distillery". It is nested deep within a dense forest at a high altitude in the Southern Japanese Alps near Mt. Kaikomagatake.
The 2026 Edition directly celebrates this unique high-altitude ecosystem, focusing heavily on its integration with local wildlife.
- The Packaging Tribute: The presentation box and label are made from traditional, high-quality Echizen-Washi paper. While the sister 2026 Yamazaki edition features the local Minase Waterfalls, the Hakushu 2026 packaging is illustrated with wild birds. Specifically, it features the red-flanked bluetail, a small forest bird native to the woods surrounding the site. This design pays homage to the official bird sanctuary established on the distillery grounds, highlighting Suntory’s 50+ year commitment to local bird conservation and environmental preservation.
- The Natural Influence: The story of the liquid relies on Hakushu's pristine mountain water, which is naturally filtered through granite rock layers for over 20 years. The cool highland climate slows the maturation process, resulting in a crisp, vibrant house style.
Liquid & Crafting Composition
The blend itself is engineered to display the crisp, herbal, and forest-like qualities that differentiate Hakushu from other mainstream Japanese whiskies:
- The Blend: It is constructed primarily as a vatting of smoky Hakushu malt matured in Bourbon barrels.
- Fermentation: The liquid benefits from Hakushu's use of wooden washbacks, which foster the native microflora and environmental microorganisms of the surrounding forest to enrich its aromatic profile.
- Specifications: Bottled at 43% ABV in a 700ml format.

- Nose: Dominant notes of fresh green apple, pear, mint, vanilla cream, and roasted green tea.
