When Jonathan Harris, Westward Single Barrel Manager and Head of Collaborations, opened his leather, Westward-branded briefcase in the barrel house outside Portland, I knew we were about to taste something special. His briefcase does not hold a notepad or laptop; it holds twelve single barrel samples from the best casks produced by Westward. I was looking for a high-proof cask that would complement our Solera Cask release and hopefully reach the heights of our first release with Westward.
After tasting small samples from roughly ten casks, Jonathan poured me a sample directly from a barrel that had aged seven and a half years. I was blown away by the intense flavors of orange marmalade, milk chocolate, and Luxardo cherries! I knew this was the one.
By the time our day at the barrel house was done, a few things were clear: my wife needed to drive home, and we had just selected the “Best of the Briefcase.”
